Two rare songs on this CD are Foggy Day and You Can Depend on Me. Anita O'Day liked to work at Basin St. the hot jazz spot in San Francisco where she could run down the street between sets and listen to friends. On December 16, 1964 she was billed opposite the Jazz Crusaders. Al Plank, her pianist had a classical background, but his playing could reflect anyone from Teddy Wilson to Herbie Hancock. Al Obidinski, was her bassist. He is still alive and kicking in San Francisco. John Poole, her drummer and alter ego, had been with her ten years at the time of this recording. Basin St. West was done in San Francisco in 1964. Jonathan Poole spent two months remastering, editing and balancing four track tape with modern technology. Featuring Merrill Hoover on piano from San Francisco, the great bassist, George Morrow, of Clifford Brown and Max Roach fame, and John Poole, Anita's long time associate on drums. Anita improvises on Christmas favorites with her long time friend from Hawaii days, Joe Castro, on piano, and the legendary Carson Smith on bass, with her drummer of 32 years, John Poole. "A band leader once said in my presence, 'I don't care if she can sing, just get me a broad with big jugs to stand up there in front of the band.' The dilemma is that a jazz singer can knock out every musician in the place while the paying customers don't understand what is going on musically and say 'too far out.' As a true jazz artist, Anita never sings a song the same way twice. Accompanied by Merrill Hoover's sensitive accompaniment on piano and George Morrow's strident bass, plus John Poole's facile handling of the brushes and sticks, Anita adds the rest of the instrumentation (adding words). She improvises but keeps the important chords that keeps the writer's intent. Anita spins a grace note like a baker whips a topping. One song is an original written by Anita called "Anita's Blues."
