This album was nominated for a Grammy! "Jazz singers, the real thing, have been in short supply for a long time.. Anita is the most consistently enlivening, surprising, authentically 'hot' jazz singers of all...She sound more spontaneous, more freshly inventive, more just plain joyful than at any previous time in her long, sometimes hard-traveling career. In short, jazz can keep you young. It's called seasoning. This is a woman so at ease with her formidable skills that she can improvise anything she can hear inside her head. Anita phrases like a horn, but she is a genuine improviser. She also cares for the lyrics and shapes them in new ways. You have to know which vowels and consonants make musical sense rather than just chattering. Norman Simmons is fiery and inventive. John Poole is buoyantly dependable as are bassist Rob Fisher and bariton/flutist Greg Smith. This LP is Anita's first version of Four Brothers with a sizzling group. This album is a tribute to Anita's stunning musicianship, wit, and ceaseless pleasure in the unexpected. Anita says, "Music is in a class with medicine - you go to school forever." Nat Hentoff 1. Philip Elwood, of the San Francisco Examiner compared Anita with Richie Cole who was performing down the street. He wrote, “Many record companies look for suitable public-oriented music, but ignore jazz. Anita’s biggest appeal is that she sells songs, like It Don’t Mean a Thing and S’Wonderful in her own distinctive way with a drum solo, which we’d never hear anywhere else. And how often do you hear a vocal-flute duet? Anita also does a spectacular duet with the piano and a stop-time sequence on Four Brothers.” Pete Stark of the San Francisco Chronicle thought September was “rare and wonderful...hearing the smoky blue voice of Anita, poking sensations that go poof, poof, poof.” The album featured Anita's wit and casual comments in the live performance. "A band leader once said in my presence, 'I don't care if she can sing, just get me a broad with big jugs to stand up there in front of the band.' The dilemma is that a jazz singer can knock out every musician in the place while the paying customers don't understand what is going on musically and say 'too far out.' But Anita's art is in getting 'far out' while keeping the customers interested and happy. Her ballad and blues are witty, salty and wise, and her performance is sophisticated." Ralph Gleason

LIMITED SUPPLY "For over three decades Anita O'Day has kept our feet stomping, our fingers snapping, and our heads bopping. She has been responsible for a whole school of singing with many imitators (like June Christ) and many disciples. She has come a long way from working with the Krupa and Kenton bands. As a true jazz artist, Anita never sings a song the same way twice. Accompanied by Merrill Hoover's sensitive accompaniment on piano and George Morrow's strident bass, plus John Poole's facile handling of the brushes and sticks, Anita adds the rest of the instrumentation (adding words). She improvises but keeps the important chords that keeps the writer's intent. Anita spins a grace note like a baker whips a topping. One song is an original written by Anita called "Anita's Blues."
